INSTALLER'S TAKE

The Revolution 5S3 is a competition-grade active front stage component set. Before anything else: if the customer does not have DSP and the budget and willingness to run 6 amplifier channels, this is not their product. The 5S3 requires active crossovers and it has no passive crossover. This is stated plainly on the page, but it bears repeating in the installer's context because nothing about the 5S3 produces results without DSP control.

When the customer does have DSP and 6 channels, the 5S3 is a compelling active 3-way set at this price point. Fiberglass cones on both the midbass and midrange are uncommon at this level. The concave fiberglass dust cap on both cone drivers adds cone stiffness where it tends to break down first on cheaper drivers. The dedicated 4 inch midrange is the feature that justifies the 3-way architecture: when the midrange is decoupled from the midbass, you can cross the midbass out at 300-500 Hz and let the midrange handle everything from there to 3-4 kHz where the tweeter takes over. Vocals and acoustic instruments live in that range and they benefit from a dedicated driver that is not simultaneously trying to reproduce door bass.

The crossover points and slopes depend heavily on the vehicle and the mounting positions. In a conventional door-kick-sail 3-way layout, the midbass crosses out between 300 and 500 Hz, the midrange crosses between 3 and 5 kHz, and the tweeter runs high-pass from there up. Time alignment for all three drivers is where a DSP like the Goldhorn earns its role. Do the measurement pass, set the delays, then tune the crossover points by ear with a reference track.

The 50-100W RMS per driver rating means you do not need massive amplification. A good quality 6-channel amp at 75 watts per channel is well within spec. Overpowering the midrange and tweeter is a more common mistake than underpowering them.

Crescendo Revolution Speaker Series

Crescendo Revolution 5S3 3-Way Speaker System

Three dedicated drivers, six amplifier channels, no passive crossover. The Revolution 5S3 is a 3-way active component set with a 6.5 inch fiberglass midbass, 4 inch fiberglass midrange, and 28mm fabric dome tweeter, each running directly from its own amplifier channel under DSP control. Competition-grade active architecture for a front stage that a passive system cannot match.

3-Way Active DSP Required 6 Amp Channels 4 Ohm Each Driver

What Active Means and Why It Matters

A passive speaker system uses a crossover network of capacitors and inductors installed between the amplifier and the drivers. The crossover divides the signal by frequency and filters each driver appropriately. It works, but it introduces insertion loss, phase shift, power waste in the crossover components, and limits the ability to tune the system after installation.

The Revolution 5S3 has no passive crossover. Each of the three drivers in the system receives its signal directly from a dedicated amplifier channel, with frequency division and level matching handled by an active DSP processor upstream. This gives the installer complete control over crossover points, slopes, level, time alignment, and equalization for each driver independently. When paired with a DSP such as the Goldhorn DSP, the 5S3 can be tuned to the specific acoustic environment of the vehicle it is installed in, producing results that no passive component set can approach.

System requirements: The Revolution 5S3 requires a minimum of 6 amplifier channels and an active DSP processor or active electronic crossover. This is not a plug-and-play component set. If your installation does not include DSP-controlled active processing, the Crescendo Revolution 5S2 2-way system with passive crossover is the appropriate alternative.

Three Drivers, Three Jobs

Midbass

6.5 in

Fiberglass cone, concave fiberglass dust cap, aluminum chassis, ferrite overhung motor. 50-100W RMS, 4 Ohm. Covers 50 Hz to 8 kHz, handles the door bass and upper bass energy that fills the mid-cabin.

Midrange

4 in

Fiberglass cone, concave fiberglass dust cap, aluminum chassis, neodymium motor. 50-100W RMS, 4 Ohm. Covers 250 Hz to 8 kHz. The dedicated midrange is what separates a 3-way from a 2-way: vocals and instruments reproduced without the midbass driver reaching toward its upper frequency limits.

Tweeter

28mm

Fabric dome, neodymium motor, precision-machined threaded aluminum housing. 50-100W RMS, 4 Ohm. Covers 2 kHz to 20 kHz. Wide-angle dispersion appropriate for automotive acoustic environments where mounting locations are rarely ideal.

Fiberglass Cones on the Midbass and Midrange

Both the 6.5 inch midbass and 4 inch midrange use fiberglass cones with concave fiberglass dust caps. Fiberglass is stiffer than paper or polypropylene at equivalent mass, which delays breakup resonances to higher frequencies and keeps the cone behaving as a piston further into its operating range. The concave dust cap geometry stiffens the center section of the cone where flex typically introduces distortion at high output levels. Both drivers use aluminum chassis for rigidity, eliminating flex-induced coloration that plastic frames introduce under load.

Neodymium Midrange and Tweeter

The 4 inch midrange uses a neodymium magnet where the 6.5 inch midbass uses ferrite. Neodymium produces higher flux density for a given magnet volume, allowing a smaller and lighter motor assembly. In a midrange driver where mass and compact dimensions matter for mounting in pillars, kick panels, and custom pods, the neodymium motor keeps the physical package smaller without sacrificing motor force. The 28mm tweeter's neodymium motor serves the same purpose: maximum motor strength from a housing small enough to surface-mount or flush-mount in tight locations.

Paired with Goldhorn DSP

Audio Intensity is the Original US Importer of Goldhorn DSP. Goldhorn's lineup covers both OEM integration applications and aftermarket DSP amplifier configurations that provide the active crossover functionality, time alignment, and equalization the Revolution 5S3 requires to perform at its design intent. For installations being built around the 5S3, a Goldhorn DSP is the natural pairing. Audio Intensity can assist with DSP configuration for the Revolution 5S3 as part of any complete system build.

What is included: One pair of 6.5 inch midbass drivers, one pair of 4 inch midrange drivers, one pair of 28mm tweeters with threaded aluminum housings. No passive crossover, no mounting hardware documented. Mounting hardware and DSP configuration are installation-dependent.
