What Amplifier Power Actually Costs

A four-channel amplifier advertised at 1000 watts for $49 is not a bargain, it is a different product than it appears. Peak or maximum power is a number derived under conditions no car audio system ever sees: a brief tone burst, a laboratory supply, and no requirement that the output stay clean. RMS power at a stated impedance and a stated distortion figure is the number that predicts what you will hear.

The gap between those two numbers is where the price difference lives. A power supply built to deliver rated output continuously costs money. Output devices rated with headroom cost money. A chassis that sinks heat rather than trapping it costs money. Remove all three and the amplifier still makes a sound, still prints a large number on the box, and still sells.

What it will not do is hold that output on a difficult passage with the alternator loaded and the amplifier hot. It clips, and a clipping amplifier is the most common way people destroy a set of speakers they otherwise looked after.

How to Choose a Car Amplifier

Four questions, and only the last one is about budget.

How many channels do you actually need?

Count the speakers that need power, not the speakers in the car. A front stage of component sets plus a subwoofer needs four channels for the front and one for the sub, which is either a five-channel amplifier or a four plus a monoblock. Rear fill is optional in almost every sound quality build and is the first thing to cut when channel count gets expensive. A fully active front stage changes the arithmetic completely: six channels for a three-way, before the subwoofer.

How much RMS power does your speaker actually want?

Match to the RMS rating at the impedance your speakers present, not to peak power. A speaker rated 100 W RMS wants an amplifier that delivers roughly that continuously at 4 ohm. Underpowering is the more common failure: an amplifier driven into clipping to reach volume sends a distorted signal that damages tweeters faster than clean power ever will.

Class AB or Class D?

Class D amplifiers are more efficient, run cooler and fit in smaller chassis, which is why almost every subwoofer amplifier built today is Class D. Class AB dissipates more heat for the same output and needs more space, and a well-executed Class AB design remains the choice of a large share of competition sound quality builds. Audio Intensity carries both, and the honest answer is that execution matters more than topology.

Should I buy an amplifier with a built-in DSP?

If you are running a front stage that needs time alignment and equalisation, an integrated DSP amplifier does two jobs in one chassis and saves both space and a signal path. If you already own a processor, or you expect to grow the system, separates give you more room to change your mind. Power, Ground and Where the Heat Goes

Three installation constraints decide whether an amplifier performs as specified, and none of them appear on the spec sheet.

Wire gauge first. An amplifier drawing 100 amps through undersized cable loses voltage before the power supply ever sees it, and the amplifier delivers less than its rating through no fault of its own. Size the run to the amplifier's fuse rating and the actual cable length, not to what fits the terminal.

Ground second. The single most common cause of amplifier noise is a ground point that is not actually a ground: paint, seam sealer, or a chassis run too long. Ground to bare metal, as short as practical, and to the same point as everything else in the signal chain.

Heat third. Class D amplifiers run cooler than Class AB but neither one wants to be under a seat with no airflow, or mounted face-down against carpet. Mount with the heatsink fins vertical where possible and leave clearance above them.

Frequently Asked Car Amplifier Questions

Do car amplifiers make a difference?

Yes, and the difference is largest where people expect it least. A head unit delivers roughly 14 to 22 watts RMS per channel in real conditions regardless of the number on the box. An external amplifier delivering rated power to the same speakers raises available headroom, which is heard as clarity and control on difficult passages rather than simply as volume. The speakers stop being asked to work from a clipping signal.

How much should a good car amplifier cost?

A competent four-channel amplifier that publishes RMS at a stated impedance starts around $160. Between $160 and $1,000 you are buying better power supplies, more headroom and higher channel counts. Above $1,400 you are buying reference-class design in small production runs. Amplifiers under $100 advertising four-figure wattage are quoting peak numbers that do not describe what the amplifier delivers continuously.

How many watts is a good car amplifier?

The right number is your speakers' RMS rating at the impedance they present, not the largest number available. A pair of component sets rated 100 W RMS wants roughly 100 watts per channel at 4 ohm. A subwoofer rated 500 W RMS at 2 ohm wants a monoblock that delivers 500 watts at 2 ohm. Matching beats maximising.

Which amplifier is best for sound quality?

Sound quality comes from clean power delivered without clipping, low noise, and a power supply that holds voltage when the music demands current. Both Class AB and Class D designs achieve this. In competition sound quality builds, Class AB designs from Tru Technology and Audio Wave and Class D designs from Arc Audio and Crescendo all appear regularly. Execution matters more than topology.

Can I use a 500 watt amplifier with 300 watt speakers?

Yes, and it is often the safer choice. An amplifier with headroom above the speaker's rating operates well within its limits and delivers a clean signal. The risk is not amplifier size, it is gain structure: set the gain to match the head unit's output rather than as a volume control, and the extra capability stays in reserve where it belongs.

What is the difference between Class AB and Class D?

Class D amplifiers switch their output devices rapidly and are far more efficient, so they run cooler and fit in smaller chassis. Class AB keeps its output devices conducting continuously, dissipating more heat for the same output and requiring more space. Class D dominates subwoofer amplification for efficiency reasons. For full-range use both remain in serious competition builds.
