The Image Dynamics IDMAX12 V.4 handles 500 watts RMS (coils in parallel) and 1000 watts peak. Power handling varies by enclosure: 750 watts maximum in the 0.65 cu ft Compact sealed alignment, 650 watts in the 1.0 cu ft Universal alignment, and 550 watts in the 1.8 cu ft Audiophile alignment. The 400 ounce motor, 55mm voice coil height, and Aluminum neck joint support sustained operation at these power levels.

Both use the same 400 ounce motor, 500 watt RMS power rating, 19mm Xmax, 55mm voice coil height, Glass Fiber/Pulp cone, Aluminum neck joint, and field-replaceable cone assembly. The Image Dynamics IDMAX12 V.4 uses a 12 inch cone with 547.39 cm2 of piston area versus 380.13 cm2 on the Image Dynamics IDMAX10 V.4, moves more air at the same excursion, extends deeper in equivalent enclosures, and requires more mounting depth at 8.15 inches versus 7.68 inches. Choose the IDMAX10 when depth is the constraint; choose the IDMAX12 when you have the space and want maximum output.

The Qts values differ significantly: D2 is 0.626 and D4 is 0.758. At the same sealed volume, the D4 runs a higher Qtc with more midbass lift but actually achieves a lower F3. In the Audiophile 1.8 cu ft sealed alignment, the D2 produces Qtc 0.972 and F3 around 32 Hz, while the D4 produces Qtc 1.131 and F3 below 30 Hz. For competition where deep bass extension is scored, the D4 in a large sealed box has an F3 advantage. For balanced accuracy, the D2 produces the flatter response. Choose based on your amplifier's preferred impedance first, but understand the sonic difference is real.

Image Dynamics recommends 0.65 cubic feet (Compact), 1.0 cubic feet (Universal), or 1.8 cubic feet (Audiophile). These are net internal volumes including driver displacement of 0.14 cubic feet. Power handling decreases as volume increases: 750W, 650W, and 550W respectively. The IDMAX12 also supports ported enclosures from 1.25 to 2.25 cubic feet, reaching F3 at 28 Hz in the Audiophile ported configuration.

The IDMAX12 ported Audiophile alignment at 2.25 cubic feet tuned to 30 Hz reaches F3 at 28 Hz. The Universal alignment at 1.75 cubic feet tuned to 35 Hz reaches F3 at 32 Hz. The 8.15 inch mounting depth comes from the 400 ounce motor assembly, the 55mm voice coil winding height required for 19mm linear Xmax, and the structural components needed to sustain 500 watts RMS. High-power drivers with large motors and extended voice coils require more depth than standard designs. Plan at least 8.5 to 9 inches of rear clearance behind your baffle before building the enclosure.
