INSTALLER'S TAKE

The IDMAX12 is 28.45 pounds and just over 8 inches deep. Same discipline as the IDMAX10: confirm clearance first, 8.5 to 9 inches minimum behind the baffle. This driver does not go in shallow builds.

The D2 vs D4 choice matters more on the IDMAX12 than on most drivers because the Qts difference between them is substantial (0.626 vs 0.758), which produces meaningfully different sealed alignments. The D2 at 1.8 cubic feet approaches Butterworth at Qtc 0.97, controlled and accurate with F3 in the low 30s. The D4 at the same volume runs Qtc 1.13, fuller sounding with a stronger midbass lift but actually reaching F3 below 30 Hz sealed. If the competition rules reward deep bass extension and you have a 500 watt amplifier that wants 2 ohms, the D4 in a large sealed box is a legitimate competition configuration. If you want accuracy over impact, the D2 is the call.

Same D2 parallel impedance situation as the IDMAX10: about 0.9 ohms parallel. Most 1-ohm stable amps will handle it, but verify. Wire series for 4 ohms if there is any doubt.

Image Dynamics IDMAX Series Subwoofers

Image Dynamics IDMAX12 V.4 12 Inch Subwoofer

The IDMAX flagship at 12 inches. A 400 ounce motor, 500 watts RMS, 19mm Xmax, 26 Hz Fs, 547.39 cm2 of cone area, and field-replaceable cone assembly. The D4 in the Audiophile sealed alignment reaches F3 below 30 Hz. This is the driver that competes in large vehicle sound quality events where deep bass scoring matters most.

IDMAX10 vs IDMAX12: More Cone, Same Platform

The Image Dynamics IDMAX10 V.4 and the IDMAX12 share the same 400 ounce motor, 500 watt RMS power rating, 19mm Xmax, 55mm voice coil height, Glass Fiber/Pulp cone, Aluminum neck joint, and field-replaceable cone assembly. The IDMAX12 adds 547.39 cm2 of cone area versus 380.13 cm2 on the IDMAX10, moves more air at the same excursion, and extends F3 deeper in equivalent enclosures. The IDMAX12 requires a larger minimum enclosure at 0.65 cubic feet sealed versus 0.50 cubic feet, and is 0.65 inches deeper at 8.15 inches. Choose the IDMAX10 when mounting depth is the constraint. Choose the IDMAX12 when you have the space and want maximum output from the IDMAX platform.

D2 parallel impedance note: The IDMAX12 D2 has Re of 1.80 ohms per coil, giving approximately 0.9 ohms wired in parallel. Verify your amplifier's minimum rated impedance before wiring parallel. Wire the D2 in series for 4 ohms if needed. The D4 wired in parallel presents exactly 2 ohms, compatible with all 1-ohm stable Class D monoblocks.

D2 vs D4: A Meaningful Alignment Difference

The IDMAX12 D2 (Qts 0.626) and D4 (Qts 0.758) produce noticeably different sealed alignments. The D2 at 1.8 cubic feet reaches F3 at 32 Hz with Qtc 0.972, approaching Butterworth and producing controlled, extended bass. The D4 at the same volume reaches F3 at 29 Hz with Qtc 1.131, with a stronger midbass lift but deeper actual F3 extension. For sound quality competition where deep bass extension is scored, the D4 in a large sealed box is worth considering specifically for its F3 advantage. For balanced accuracy, the D2 produces the flatter response. Match the impedance to your amplifier first, but understand the sonic character difference is real.

IDMAX Construction at 12 Inches

Every IDMAX construction feature applies to the 12: Glass Fiber/Pulp cone for high stiffness and low distortion at 19mm excursion, Parabolic Santoprene surround for long-term compliance stability, Nomex spider for thermal stability at 500 watts, Aluminum neck joint pulling heat away from the BASV former more aggressively than Polycarbonate, and the American-made aluminum flat-wound extended voice coil with 55mm winding height keeping motor force consistent across the full excursion range.

The field-replaceable cone assembly is held by 16 screws with alignment shims. No adhesive, no curing time, no professional service required. The 400 ounce motor structure stays in service through the life of the system.

26 Hz Fs and Ported Potential

The 26 Hz Fs sits one Hz lower than the IDMAX10 and produces equivalent deep bass extension with more cone area. The ported Audiophile alignment at 2.25 cubic feet tuned to 30 Hz reaches F3 at 28 Hz. Combined with the 547.39 cm2 piston area, this is the IDMAX configuration that produces the most output and the deepest extension of any 12 inch production driver in Image Dynamics' lineup.

Fitment at a glance: mounting depth 8.15 inches, cutout 11.0 inches, outside diameter 12.40 inches, driver displacement 0.14 cubic feet, net weight 28.45 lbs. Plan at least 8.5 to 9 inches of rear clearance. Confirm mounting location can support the driver weight before installation.

Sealed Enclosure Performance: Pre-Calculated Results

Using Image Dynamics' published Thiele-Small parameters and their recommended sealed volumes, here are the predicted Qtc, system resonance (Fc), and F3 rolloff. Volumes are net internal per the IDMAX Series manual. Calculated using the same formulas as the Audio Intensity Sealed Box Calculator.

The IDMAX12 has 26 Hz Fs and 547.39 cm2 of cone area, producing exceptional sealed extension. The D2 at the Audiophile 1.8 cu ft alignment reaches F3 at 32 Hz sealed. The D4 at the same volume reaches F3 below 30 Hz sealed, which is among the deepest sealed extension available from a 12 inch production driver. The D4 runs notably higher Qtc than D2 at the same volume due to its higher Qts and smaller Vas.

D2 parallel impedance note: The IDMAX12 D2 has Re of 1.80 ohms per coil. Wired in parallel the combined load is approximately 0.9 ohms. Verify your amplifier's minimum rated impedance before wiring parallel. Wire the D2 in series for 4 ohms if needed. The D4 wired in parallel presents exactly 2 ohms, compatible with all 1-ohm stable Class D monoblocks.
