Image Dynamics ID Series Subwoofers
Hand-built in the USA since 1992. The ID8 V.4 fits into enclosures as small as 0.20 cubic feet, handles 150 watts RMS, and uses construction materials that Image Dynamics specifies by name: Parabolic Santoprene surround, Poly/Mica cone, Hybrid Progressive Nomex spider, BASV former.
The Image Dynamics ID8 V.4 is engineered for installations where enclosure volume is the hard constraint. The recommended sealed range starts at 0.20 cubic feet, which fits under seats, in door pods, in cargo corners, and behind panels that no larger driver can reach. At 0.35 cubic feet, the Universal alignment delivers balanced, musical bass for daily use. At 0.45 cubic feet, the Audiophile alignment extends further at the cost of some power handling headroom.
This is not a budget driver with a budget price that happens to fit in small boxes. Image Dynamics engineered the ID Series from the start for small enclosure performance: a Qts of 0.463 (D2) provides a well-controlled sealed alignment across the full recommended volume range, and 12.5mm of one-way Xmax gives the driver real excursion capability within those compact dimensions.
The Parabolic Santoprene surround is the first thing to understand. Santoprene is a thermoplastic rubber compound with exceptional UV resistance, temperature stability, and long-term compliance retention. Image Dynamics chose it specifically for automotive use where surrounds face heat, cold, and sun exposure that destroy foam and degrade generic rubber over time. The parabolic profile maintains cone linearity at high excursion.
The Poly/Mica cone embeds mica particles in a polypropylene matrix to increase cone stiffness without adding mass. Stiffer cone, lower distortion, more accurate bass reproduction at all volume levels. The Hybrid Progressive Nomex spider gives firm control at high output and maintains fine detail at low listening levels simultaneously, which is why the ID Series has been used in sound quality competition as well as daily listening builds.
The BASV (Body Alignment Stiffening Voice Coil) former pulls heat away from the voice coil winding during sustained high-power operation. Better heat dissipation equals longer driver life at rated power, and Image Dynamics rates the ID8 V.4 at a consistent 150 watts RMS continuous precisely because they design to that figure rather than inflating it.
Y-35 grade motor steel has a higher magnetic flux density than standard motor steel, which increases efficiency and bass output per watt. The Extended Y-35 motor on the ID8 V.4 provides enhanced power handling and additional cooling for the voice coil. With a 90 ounce motor assembly and only an 8-inch cone to drive, the ID8 has strong motor force relative to its moving mass, which contributes to its tight, controlled bass character in sealed enclosures.
Image Dynamics recommends sealed enclosures for the ID Series for optimal sound quality, but the ID8 V.4 supports sealed, ported, and bandpass applications. The sealed range of 0.20 to 0.45 cubic feet covers everything from the tightest under-seat build to a dedicated audiophile enclosure. Ported alignment extends F3 down to 34 Hz in the Audiophile 0.90 cubic foot configuration at reduced power handling. The enclosure performance section below shows the calculated sealed alignments for both D2 and D4 variants.
Fitment at a glance: mounting depth 4.45 inches, cutout 7.125 inches, outside diameter 8.375 inches, driver displacement 0.0525 cubic feet. For ported enclosure dimensions and port specifications, the ID Series manual provides Compact, Universal, and Audiophile ported configurations with port diameter and length.
The D2 wires to 1 ohm or 4 ohms; the D4 wires to 2 ohms or 8 ohms. The variants have meaningfully different Thiele-Small parameters: the D2 has a larger Vas (26.01 L vs 13.47 L), producing a different sealed alignment character at the same box size. The enclosure performance section below shows exactly how they differ. Choose based on your amplifier's preferred impedance first.
Hand-built in Ontario, California since 1992. Image Dynamics covers the ID8 V.4 with a 1-year limited warranty through authorized dealers. Every unit sold by Audio Intensity is brand new with full warranty coverage.
Audio Intensity ships the Image Dynamics ID8 V.4 fast from Tullahoma, Tennessee, with real installer support. Tell us your available enclosure space and your amplifier and we will help you pick the right voice coil and build the right box.
Using Image Dynamics' published Thiele-Small parameters, here are the predicted Qtc, system resonance (Fc), and F3 rolloff for each sealed volume. Volumes are net internal (including driver displacement), per the ID Series manual. Calculated using the same formulas as the Audio Intensity Sealed Box Calculator.
D2 vs D4 alignment note: The D2 and D4 have significantly different Vas values (26.01 L vs 13.47 L), which produces different sealed alignments in the same enclosure. The D4's smaller Vas means it is relatively less affected by sealed box volume, running lower Qtc and lower F3 at the same box size. Image Dynamics publishes a single F3 table covering both variants; the calculated values below reflect the actual measured difference between them.
| Box Volume | Qtc | Fc | F3 |

Power handling note: Image Dynamics rates sealed enclosure power handling by volume. The 0.20 cu ft Compact alignment supports 250 watts RMS; the Universal 0.35 cu ft supports 200 watts RMS; the Audiophile 0.45 cu ft supports 150 watts RMS. Larger boxes reduce acoustic stiffness and allow more cone excursion at low frequencies, which limits power handling. Match your amplifier to the enclosure you plan to build. Run your own numbers in the Sealed Box Calculator.
