Designing to a class, choosing an alignment, and the measurement sequence that gets a car ready to be judged.
Decide What You Are Competing In First
Sound quality and SPL pull a build in opposite directions. An SQ car is designed around staging, tonal accuracy and the listening position. An SPL car is designed around a resonant peak and the microphone location. The enclosure, the driver count and the cabin treatment all change depending on which answer you give, so give it before you buy anything.
Design Backwards From the Class
Classes are usually bounded by driver count, cone area, amplifier power, or a combination. Those bounds are the design brief. A system that measures well but sits one driver over the limit scores nothing, and rebuilding a sealed wall to drop a driver is not a weekend job.
Power and electrical
Where a class caps power, the cap is enforced on rated output, and the electrical system still has to deliver it cleanly. Charging system, wire gauge and battery capacity are part of the design rather than an afterthought bolted on the week before.
Enclosure and Alignment
For SQ, the enclosure exists to control the driver, and a sealed alignment with a predictable rolloff is easier to integrate with a front stage than a sharply tuned ported cabinet. For SPL, the cabinet is tuned to the peak the class and the vehicle reward. Use EBP as the first filter: 0 to 50 suggests sealed, 50 to 100 is a transition region, and 100 or above suggests ported.
Run the driver through the EBP calculator before you commit, then work the volumes in the subwoofer box suite.
Tuning and Measurement
A competition system is measured, not guessed at. Time alignment, crossover points and equalization are set against measurements taken at the judging position, and then verified by listening rather than the other way round.

Leave Time for the Boring Part
Judged categories include installation quality, safety and workmanship. Fastener choice, wire loom, panel fit and documented power distribution all carry points, and they are the easiest points to lose by running out of time. Build the schedule so the last week is tuning, not fabrication.
