Most 12-inch SQ subwoofers don't actually want a small sealed enclosure. They want a properly sized one. Of the five drivers we stock at Audio Intensity, four call for 1.0 to 1.4 ft3 sealed per the manufacturer spec sheets. The one exception is the Wavtech thinPRO12, a shallow-mount driver voiced for 0.4 to 0.6 ft3 because it's built for behind-seat installs in trucks where there's three inches of clearance and not much else.

A sealed box works because the air trapped inside acts as a stiffening spring against the cone. Box too small and Qtc climbs above 0.9, the bass turns peaky and one-note. Box too big and Qtc drops below 0.6, the driver loses control of the lower extension and you trade SQ for a few dB of SPL. The published recommended volumes from the manufacturer are usually centered on a Qtc of 0.65 to 0.75, which is where the response stays flat through the passband and the cone stops on the dime when the music does.

It's a number that gets repeated because it sounds tight and looks small in print. The actual recommended sealed volumes from the four standard-depth drivers in this guide all sit between 0.65 and 1.8 ft3, with the manufacturer-optimal point usually around 1.0 to 1.25 ft3 after driver displacement.

"Small" in the context of a hatchback or compact sedan trunk means a sealed box that fits behind a rear seat or under a cargo deck without eating the spare tire well. For a standard-depth 12, that translates to a finished external footprint somewhere around 16 by 14 by 14 inches, which after wall thickness and bracing yields the 1.0 to 1.25 ft3 internal volume the spec sheet calls for. That's small. It's not 0.5 ft3 small.

The 0.4 to 0.6 ft3 range is real, but it's a shallow-mount range. Drivers built for that volume use compact motors and short cones tuned to work against a stiffer air spring. We typically aim for 1.1 ft3 internal after driver displacement, which gets a Qtc near 0.7. That alignment plays flat from 35 Hz up and rolls off cleanly below it without the midbass bump you get when you push the box volume too small. Note that 0.21 ft3 displacement number. It's high. After the driver goes in a 1.1 ft3 internal box, you've only got 0.89 ft3 of air space left, which sits right at the bottom of the recommended range. The build math has to start with the driver's displacement, not after. We typically build a 1.35 ft3 internal box for this driver so the post-installation volume lands at 1.14 ft3, dead center of spec.

The 1200W RMS rating means this driver wants real power. On 500W you'll get clean SQ output, but you're not hearing what the motor can do. Pair it with a 1000 to 1200W RMS amp wired to 1 ohm (D2 dual 2 ohm coils in parallel) or 2 ohm (D4 dual 4 ohm in parallel) and the dynamic range opens up. Daily-driver gain settings stay well below clipping with that headroom in reserve.

Why we recommend it

This is the rare shallow-mount 12 that doesn't sound like a shallow-mount 12. EBP works out to 26 / (1 / Qes squared, equivalent of about 51), which lands the driver right in the sealed-leaning transition window. With 20mm one-way Xmax behind a 510 cm2 cone, it moves real air for a 3-inch-deep driver. The 0.4 to 1.0 ft3 sealed range is the only legitimate "small sealed" window in this guide, and it's small because the motor is small, not because the driver is being run outside its design envelope.

The tradeoff is sensitivity. At 84 dB the thinPRO12 is 3 to 4 dB less efficient than the IDMAX 12 V4 in equivalent boxes, so you're trading some output for the ability to fit the driver in places a standard-depth 12 simply will not go. The 750W RMS rating gives you the headroom to make up most of that sensitivity gap with amplifier power.

Micro Series boxes are stack-fab construction with dowel reinforcement, 8/32 threaded inserts on the backside of the baffle for machine screw mounting, and the same Langboard Elite 3/4 inch MDF as the rest of the Proline X line. When to pick the IDQ 12 over the IDMAX 12

The IDQ 12 V4 is for the build where your amp is in the 300 to 500W RMS range and the trunk only fits a 5 to 6 inch deep driver. EBP of 43.3 means it's clearly sealed-leaning, sensitivity of 87 dB is 3 dB higher than the thinPRO12 in the same volume box, and the 5.91 inch mounting depth fits places the IDMAX won't. You give up excursion (this driver runs out of mechanical travel before the IDMAX is breathing hard), but for SQ-first listening at moderate gain, the IDQ stays clean through its operating range.

Installer's Take: What Actually Matters Once the Driver Is Picked

Spec sheets get you a short list. The install is what makes the difference between SQ on paper and SQ in the cab. A few things we run into often enough that they're worth saying out loud.

Mounting depth is a hard constraint, not a guideline

Measure the trunk before you order. Pull the carpet, find the actual metal floor, account for any cargo deck or factory amp tray that's eating depth. The IDMAX 12 V4 needs 8.15 inches plus terminal cup clearance, which is closer to 9 in real installs. The NB5 12 wants 8.75 inches plus the same. If your floor is shallower than that, you're looking at the IDQ 12 (5.91 in), the NB2 12 (6.75 in), or the thinPRO12 (3.0 in). Don't try to make a deeper driver fit by cheating the box.

Box volume is internal, after driver displacement

When the spec sheet says 1.25 ft3, that's the air volume the driver actually sees, not the external dimensions. A 1.25 ft3 internal target with a 0.21 ft3 displacement driver (NB5 12) means you're cutting a 1.46 ft3 internal cavity. Add 3/4 inch of wall thickness on every side and external dimensions land roughly 1.5 inches larger in each direction than the air volume alone would suggest. We factor displacement and bracing into every Proline X build.

Wiring impedance to the amp's optimum load

Every driver in this guide except the NB2 12 comes in either Dual 2 ohm (D2) or Dual 4 ohm (D4). Two 2-ohm coils in parallel = 1 ohm. Two 2-ohm in series = 4 ohm. Two 4-ohm in parallel = 2 ohm. Two 4-ohm in series = 8 ohm. Pick the configuration that matches what your amp does best. A monoblock that makes 1000W at 1 ohm and 500W at 4 ohm benefits from a D2 driver wired to 1 ohm. A four-channel amp running the sub bridged usually does better with a 2 or 4 ohm load, so a D4 driver wired to 2 ohm is the play.

Set the gain at the amplifier, not at the head unit

Run the head unit volume to clipping point on a known reference track (we use a 0 dBFS sine sweep or a familiar bass-heavy track), back it off two clicks, then set the amp gain to match input voltage. This puts the entire signal path right under clipping and gives the driver headroom for transient peaks without compressing the signal. SPL meter readings are a downstream consequence, not the target itself.

Sealing matters, but not "24-hour acoustic caulk cure" matters

Every Proline X box is sealed on both sides of every joint with non-hardening gasket sealant during assembly, and the V-groove dado joinery on Performance and Loaded Series boxes leaves enough mating surface that an extra bead at the seam is overkill. If you're building your own box, run a bead of polyurethane construction adhesive in every joint before you screw it together. You don't need to wait 24 hours to test, you need the joint to actually be tight before the adhesive cures.

Match your amp to the lower end of the driver's RMS rating for clean SQ work, and the upper end if you want headroom for daily listening.
