Shallow Mount Subwoofer

Shallow mount subwoofers solve a specific installation problem — how to get real bass output from a driver that has to fit in 2 to 4 inches of mounting depth. The answer is in the motor design. A purpose-built shallow mount motor is engineered for the excursion characteristics of a compact enclosure, not adapted from a standard-depth design. When that's done correctly, the driver actually performs in the volume it's installed into rather than fighting against it.

This collection covers the full shallow mount lineup from Wavtech, Arc Audio, Audiomobile, Prodigy, and Image Dynamics — from 6 inch drivers designed for underseat and custom panel builds up through 12 inch behind-seat truck applications. Proline X CNC-manufactures enclosures spec-matched to the shallow mount drivers in this collection, including direct-fit behind-seat boxes for the Ford F-150 (2015–2023 and 2024–2025) and Ford Maverick.

Choosing a Shallow Mount Subwoofer

Shallow mount selection starts with two measurements: available mounting depth and available enclosure volume. Both numbers constrain your options before brand or model even enters the conversation. Get those numbers from your vehicle first, then match a driver to them.

Installation Basics

Mounting Depth

The most critical spec for any shallow mount application. Measure from the mounting surface to the nearest obstruction behind it — seat track, floor, framing — and give yourself at least a half inch of clearance beyond the driver's stated depth. Most drivers in this collection fall between 2.9 and 4 inches.

Enclosure Volume

Every driver has a recommended enclosure volume range. Too small and output is thin and weak. Too large and the driver loses control, sounds loose, and risks damage at high excursion. Proline X builds enclosures to the exact volume and tuning specifications of specific drivers — not approximations. If a Proline X enclosure is available for the driver you're buying, it's the right box for that driver.

Driver Size Guide

6 Inch

Suited to underseat installations, custom door or kick panel builds, and any application where cone area is less important than packaging. Fills in low-frequency content that small factory speakers can't produce. Pairs well with a separate subwoofer handling the deeper octaves.

8 Inch

Extends output and low-frequency reach while remaining compact enough for the tightest behind-seat truck applications. The right call when a 6 inch isn't quite enough and a 10 inch won't fit.

10 Inch

The most common shallow mount size. Enough cone area for meaningful output in a sealed enclosure that fits most sedan trunks and mid-size SUVs. A good balance of output, depth, and enclosure size.

12 Inch

For behind-seat truck builds where you have the footprint but not the depth. Produces the closest output to a full-depth 12 inch in a fraction of the mounting space. Requires more enclosure volume — confirm available space before committing to this size.

Brands in This Collection

Wavtech thinPRO

Purpose-built shallow mount drivers with patent-pending motor designs engineered specifically for compact enclosure performance. The thinPRO 10 runs 600W RMS at 2.9 inches of mounting depth. The thinPRO 12 runs 750W RMS at 3.0 inches. Both are available loaded in Proline X direct-fit enclosures for the Ford F-150 and F-250 — no cutting, no modification required.

Arc Audio A-Series

A flat/shallow-mount basket with a linear motor structure optimized for sealed enclosure use. American-engineered drivers built for sound quality applications where installation depth is limited but output quality is not negotiable. Proline X builds spec-matched down-fire sealed enclosures for the A10 and A12.

Audiomobile EVO

Brings Audiomobile's T-shaped magnetic gap technology into a shallow mount form factor. The gap geometry keeps the magnetic field more linear across the voice coil's travel range, reducing distortion at high excursion — particularly relevant when the driver is working in a tighter acoustic space.

Prodigy NB3 Series

High-excursion shallow mount driver with a 3-inch voice coil in a compact basket. Available in 10 and 12 inch sizes. Suited to builds where output requirements aren't modest but installation depth is still a hard constraint. Proline X enclosures available for the NB3.

The Proline X Enclosure Advantage

Every shallow mount driver in this collection can be paired with a Proline X enclosure built to that driver's parameters. This matters more in shallow mount applications than with standard-depth drivers — because the enclosure volume is already constrained by the installation space, getting the internal dimensions exactly right is what determines whether the driver performs as designed.

Proline X enclosures are CNC-manufactured on a ShopSabre router in Tullahoma, Tennessee, calculated from each driver's actual Thiele-Small parameters. No other retailer carrying these brands builds enclosures this way.

Direct-fit options for the Ford F-150 (2015–2023 and 2024–2025) and Ford Maverick are available as empty enclosures or as loaded systems with the driver pre-installed. Contact us to confirm fitment for your specific truck configuration.
