Manufacturers do not all measure sensitivity the same way, so treat a 1 dB gap between two brands as noise and a 4 dB gap as real. Four decibels is roughly the difference between a set that plays cleanly off a head unit and one that needs an amplifier to wake up.

What a Component Set Does That a Coaxial Cannot

A coaxial speaker puts the tweeter on a post in the middle of the woofer cone, which means the tweeter ends up wherever the woofer has to go. In almost every vehicle built in the last thirty years, that is the bottom of a door panel, below knee height and aimed at the carpet. High frequencies are directional. Put them down there and the image sits down there with them.

A component set separates the tweeter so it can go in the sail panel, the A-pillar, or the top corner of the door card, which puts it near ear level in most cars. The crossover moves out of the woofer basket into its own housing, where a real inductor and a film capacitor will physically fit. Tweeter height and crossover quality account for most of the audible difference between a component set and a coaxial at the same price.

Audio Intensity carries component sets because staging is what the IASCA and MECA score sheets reward, and staging is the one thing a coaxial cannot buy back with more power.

How to Choose a Component Set

Five questions decide the shortlist, and all five come back to the amplifier. Work through them in order and the tier you belong in becomes obvious.

Do I need an amplifier for component speakers?

Read the RMS rating, not the peak rating. A component set rated at 50 W RMS or less with a sensitivity at or above 89 dB will play at reasonable volume off a factory or aftermarket head unit, because head units deliver roughly 14 to 22 W RMS per channel in practice regardless of the number printed on the box. A set rated 80 W RMS or higher, or one with a sensitivity below 88 dB, will sound thin and undynamic on head unit power. On this page four sets are rated at or below 60 W RMS and eight sit in the 70 to 100 W RMS band.

What does a fully active three-way system need that a passive set does not?

The three Crescendo Revolution systems on this page ship with no passive crossover at all. Each driver wires directly to its own amplifier channel, which means six channels per pair plus a DSP or active electronic crossover to set the crossover points. Crescendo specifies 4 ohm on every driver and 50 to 100 W RMS per driver depending on the model. If you do not already own a DSP and a six channel amplifier, budget for both before you budget for the speakers.

How much sensitivity difference actually matters?

Sensitivity is stated in dB at 1 W and 1 metre, and every 3 dB represents a doubling of amplifier power for the same output. The published figures across this collection span 85.5 dB to 92 dB. That 6.5 dB spread means the least sensitive set on the page needs roughly four and a half times the amplifier power of the most sensitive one to reach the same volume. Use sensitivity to sort sets into tiers, not to rank two sets that sit one decibel apart.

Is a three-way set always better than a two-way?

No. A three-way adds a dedicated midrange so the midbass driver never has to reproduce vocals, which is why competition cars run three-way. It also adds a third mounting location, more crossover points, and in the active case three amplifier channels per side. A well-placed two-way with the tweeter on axis beats a badly placed three-way every time. Buy the third way when you have somewhere good to put it.

What does more money actually buy?

Between the $199.99 and $399.99 sets on this page, the measurable changes are motor and cone material and a lower resonance frequency. The Audiocircle Hamburg Line publishes an Fs of 48 Hz, a Qts of 0.48, and 3.7 mm of one-way excursion, which is what lets a 6.5 inch midbass reach down to 60 Hz without handing the work to a subwoofer. Above $769.99 the money buys the active topology and per-driver control that comes with it, rather than simply better parts.

Mounting Depth, Cutout, and Where the Tweeter Goes

Mounting depth kills more component installs than any other number. Published depths on this page run from 54 mm (2.13 in) on the 5.25 inch Audio Dynamics CS524 to 67 mm (2.64 in) on the Audiocircle Hamburg Line. Measure from the mounting surface of the door to the nearest obstruction, usually the window glass at full down travel or the regulator arm, before ordering.

Cutout diameter and bolt circle are separate numbers, and the bolt circle is always the larger of the two. The Karma Mobile Audio Aspect 6.1 is specified at a 144 mm cutout with a 157 mm bolt circle across six holes, so a factory opening cut for a four bolt pattern needs an adapter ring even where the driver itself clears the hole. The Audiocircle Stuttgart Line uses the 165 mm DIN mounting standard and the Hamburg Line uses a 141 mm mounting diameter.

6.5 Inch Component Speakers, and What That Number Really Means

Thirteen of the 15 component sets Audio Intensity stocks are 6.5 inch, which is the most common front door size in the American market and the size most factory openings are cut for. The same driver is sold as 6.5 inch, 165 mm, and 16.5 cm depending on where the manufacturer is based, and European brands often print 17 cm for the same frame. A set listed at 6-3/4 inch usually drops into a 6.5 inch opening as well, because the difference is in the mounting flange rather than the cone. Most of them are 2-way, meaning one 6.5 inch woofer and one tweeter per side with an external crossover in its own housing rather than a network buried in the woofer basket.

What the number does not tell you is whether it fits. Two 6.5 inch sets on this page differ by 24 mm in mounting diameter, 165 mm against 141 mm, which is the difference between a bolt-in and an afternoon with a hole saw, and their published depths span 62 mm to 67 mm. Read the depth and the cutout, not the nominal size. The remaining two sets are 5.25 inch, for doors and dashes that were never cut for a 6.5.

For the tweeter, aim for the sail panel or the top corner of the door card, angled across the car toward the opposite headrest rather than straight at the near listener. Firing a tweeter directly at the near ear from 40 cm away makes that side loud and collapses the image toward the door. Crossing the two tweeters gives the far speaker a path length advantage that partly offsets the seating position. The Three Tiers, and Which One You Are In

Every component set Audio Intensity stocks falls into one of three amplification tiers. The tiers are set by RMS rating, not by price, and the two do not track each other: the cheapest set on this page wants less power than a set costing $100 more. Tier 1

Head unit capable, rated 60 W RMS or under

What is considered a component speaker?

A component speaker set is a car speaker system sold as separate pieces: a woofer, a matching tweeter, and an external crossover, one of each per side. A coaxial speaker combines the same drivers into a single frame with the tweeter mounted on a post over the woofer cone. The separation is the definition. It is what lets the tweeter mount somewhere the woofer cannot go.

Do component speakers sound better than coaxial speakers?

In the front stage, yes, and the reason is placement rather than driver quality. A door-mounted coaxial fires its tweeter at the carpet from below knee height, and high frequencies are directional enough that the whole image follows them down there. A component set puts the tweeter near ear level in the sail panel or A-pillar, which raises the vocal image to the windshield. For rear fill, where you want the sound to stay quiet and diffuse, a coaxial is the better choice.

What is the best component speaker brand?

There is no single best brand, because the right set is decided by the amplifier behind it, not the badge. Can I install component speakers myself?

The woofer swap is the same job as a coaxial swap: pull the door card, unbolt the factory speaker, bolt in the new one. The extra work is the tweeter and the crossover. The tweeter needs a mounting location and a wire run to the door, and the crossover box needs somewhere dry inside the door or behind the kick panel. Budget an afternoon per side the first time.
