Mastering the Front Stage: A Buyer's Guide
Dome Material: Soft vs. Hard
In the reflective environment of a vehicle, dome material plays a significant role in the final voicing. Soft domes — silk and textile — produce a smooth, natural sound with excellent internal damping. They're forgiving of poor recordings and hard reflective surfaces like glass, and they offer wider dispersion, making them a strong choice for off-axis factory locations. Hard domes — aluminum, magnesium, beryllium — are prized for stiffness and low mass. They extend higher into the frequency range, often past 20kHz, and deliver greater detail and transient snap. They require careful tuning to avoid harshness in a car environment.
Resonant Frequency (Fs) and Crossover Point
When building an active system, the Fs of the tweeter determines how low you can cross it over. Standard tweeters with an Fs of 1500Hz or higher are typically crossed above 3500Hz — best for three-way systems where a midrange handles vocals. Large-format and wideband drivers with an Fs below 1000Hz can be crossed as low as 2000Hz. This matters in a two-way system because it allows the tweeter to carry more of the vocal range to the dashboard, raising the soundstage.
Placement: On-Axis vs. Off-Axis
On-axis placement — facing the listener directly from an A-pillar or sail panel — delivers the most detail and highest frequency extension. Off-axis placement relies on reflections or wide dispersion. If you're using factory dashboard locations firing into the windshield, a soft dome is typically the safer choice to avoid harsh reflections.
Active System Design

That means no passive crossover box — instead, a DSP or active crossover on your amplifier assigns each driver its specific frequency range. This gives you full control over crossover slope, time alignment, and level matching, ensuring clean integration with your midbass drivers.
