INSTALLER'S TAKE

The NB5 8-inch is a "small-box" monster. It has a mounting depth of 6.5 inches, which is beefy for an 8, but that's because the motor is absolutely huge. During testing, these drivers showed incredible control in the 30Hz-40Hz range, which is rare for an 8-inch sub. I highly recommend a ported enclosure tuned to around 34Hz to really let that Faraday-ring-equipped motor shine. The 4AWG push terminals are a nice touch, making it easy to run thick wire for multiple sub configurations. If you have the depth, this sub will easily outperform many budget 10s and 12s on the market.

Large Motor Performance in a Compact 8-Inch Footprint

The Prodigy Audio 8" NB5 Series Subwoofer is engineered for the enthusiast who refuses to compromise on output just because space is at a premium. Unlike typical small-diameter woofers, the NB5 series is built around a massive 180-ounce ferrite motor structure and a high-temp 2.5-inch flat aluminum voice coil. This combination allows for a conservative 800W RMS power rating, providing the "heavy-weight" performance needed to anchor a high-end SQL system in under-seat or hatch applications.

Advanced Inductance Control and Thermal Stability

Precision is at the heart of the NB5's design. It features dual Aluminum ID Faraday shorting rings (upper and lower) which significantly reduce distortion caused by inductance throughout the cone's full range of motion. To keep the 2.5" coil cool during intense sessions, the motor utilizes a vented pole design with radial gap vents. This air-cooling system, paired with a heavy-duty cast aluminum frame that acts as a heat sink, ensures that the NB5 maintains its performance without thermal compression, even when pushed to its 17mm Xmax limit.

Built for Abuse: Competition-Grade Soft Parts

The NB5-8 isn't just about raw power; it’s about durability. It features an extreme-duty Nomex spider with stitched double tinsel leads to prevent lead-slap and ensure long-term reliability. The competition-grade treated paper cone is mated to a high-roll, heavy-duty foam surround, allowing for 28mm of mechanical clearance (X-mech) to handle unexpected transients. Whether you are aiming for a tight, punchy daily driver or a compact SPL demo box, the NB5 8-inch delivers the low-end authority typically reserved for much larger drivers.

🎯 Recommended Enclosure: Can work in either sealed or ported, though usually leans toward sealed. Consider your goals: sealed for accuracy, ported for efficiency and output.

Pro Tip: EBP is just one factor in enclosure design. Always use complete Thiele-Small parameters and modeling software for optimal results. Our custom enclosures are engineered specifically for each subwoofer's parameters.

Which to Choose?

  • Choose Sealed for tighter, punchier, and more accurate sound, or if space is limited
  • Choose Ported for max output, deep bass, and high efficiency, especially for genres like hip-hop

Efficiency Bandwidth Product (EBP)

What is EBP?

The Efficiency Bandwidth Product (EBP) is calculated by dividing the subwoofer's resonant frequency (Fs) by its electrical damping (Qes). This single number helps predict which enclosure type will work best with your subwoofer.

How to Use EBP

  • EBP < 50: Ideal for Sealed enclosures
  • EBP 50-100: Can work in either, though usually leans toward sealed
  • EBP > 100: Ideal for Ported enclosures
