INSTALLER'S TAKE

The IDMAX10 is 27.8 pounds and almost 8 inches deep. Before anything else, confirm you have 8 to 8.5 inches of clearance behind the baffle. That is the real constraint. This driver does not go in shallow enclosures or behind seats. It goes in a properly built sealed or ported box with structural baffle support rated for its weight.

What the 400 ounce motor gives you at 10 inches is control. The transient response at 500 watts is clean and precise in a way that smaller-motored drivers cannot achieve at that power level. The 27 Hz Fs means the sealed alignments start their rolloff much lower than typical 10 inch drivers, and the ported Audiophile alignment at 2.0 cubic feet tuned to 30 Hz reaching F3 at 26 Hz is a specification that belongs in a 12 inch driver conversation, not a 10 inch one. That is the whole point of the IDMAX platform.

The D2 parallel load is about 0.9 ohms. Most 1-ohm stable Class D amps will handle it, but check yours specifically before wiring. If there is any doubt, wire in series for 4 ohms and match a higher-powered amplifier accordingly. The driver will tell you when it is happy; clipping before it is fully broken in will not end well given what this driver costs.

Image Dynamics IDMAX Series Subwoofers

Image Dynamics IDMAX10 V.4 10 Inch Subwoofer

The flagship Image Dynamics 10 inch driver. A 400 ounce motor, 500 watts RMS, 19mm Xmax, 27 Hz Fs, Glass Fiber/Pulp cone, Aluminum neck joint, and 7.68 inches of mounting depth. Built for serious sound quality competition and high-output daily use where a standard 10 inch driver is not enough.

The 400 Ounce Motor

The IDMAX10 V.4 uses a 400 ounce Extended Y-35 motor, up from 280 ounces on the IDQ12 and 180 ounces on the IDQ8/IDQ10. At 27.8 pounds, the IDMAX10 is heavier than most 12 inch subwoofers. The majority of that weight is the motor. A 400 ounce motor driving a 10 inch cone with 19mm Xmax through 500 watts RMS produces an entirely different operating margin than a standard-duty driver. Motor force relative to moving mass is the parameter that determines transient accuracy, and the IDMAX10 has it in quantity.

D2 parallel impedance note: The IDMAX10 D2 has Re of 1.80 ohms per coil, giving approximately 0.9 ohms wired in parallel. Verify your amplifier's minimum rated impedance before wiring parallel. Wire the D2 in series for 4 ohms if needed. The D4 wired in parallel presents 2 ohms, compatible with all 1-ohm stable Class D monoblocks.

IDMAX vs IDQ vs ID: Three Different Platforms

All three Image Dynamics series share the Parabolic Santoprene surround and Nomex spider. Beyond that they diverge significantly. The Image Dynamics ID10 V.4 uses copper voice coil wire, a fixed cone assembly, and a 127 ounce motor for reliable daily use at an accessible price. The Image Dynamics IDQ10 V.4 uses aluminum voice coil wire, a field-replaceable cone assembly, and a 180 ounce motor for sound quality competition. The IDMAX10 uses aluminum voice coil wire, a field-replaceable cone assembly, and a 400 ounce motor with 19mm Xmax and a Glass Fiber/Pulp cone for maximum output and deepest bass extension at the highest power level. Choose based on what your system actually needs, not what costs the most.

Glass Fiber/Pulp Cone and Aluminum Neck Joint

The IDMAX10 uses a different cone material than the IDQ Series. Where the IDQ uses a Poly/Mica composite, the IDMAX uses a Glass Fiber/Pulp composite. Glass fiber reinforcement provides higher stiffness and lower mass than polypropylene-based cones, which supports the higher excursion and power levels the IDMAX is rated for. The Glass Fiber/Pulp blend maintains pistonic behavior through the longer excursion range the 19mm Xmax enables.

The neck joint is Aluminum rather than the Polycarbonate used on the IDQ Series. The Aluminum neck joint pulls heat away from the BASV voice coil former more aggressively than Polycarbonate, which is important for a driver handling 500 watts continuously. It also provides higher mechanical strength at the cone-to-voice coil junction where flexing forces are greatest at maximum excursion.

Extended Voice Coil: 55mm Height

The IDMAX10 voice coil winding height is 55mm (2.16 inches), compared to 38.3mm on the IDQ Series. This extended winding keeps more conductor length in the magnetic gap across the full 19mm one-way excursion range, maintaining consistent motor force from rest to full throw. Longer voice coil height is one of the primary means of achieving high linear Xmax in a production driver, and 55mm on a 400 ounce motor is an aggressive specification that explains both the 19mm Xmax and the 500 watt RMS rating.

27 Hz Fs and Deep Bass Extension

The IDMAX10's free-air resonant frequency is 27 Hz. This is meaningfully lower than the IDQ10 at 42 Hz and the ID10 at 32 Hz. A lower Fs means the driver's natural resonance is deeper in the bass range, which translates to better extension in sealed enclosures and better alignment flexibility in ported designs. The ported Audiophile alignment at 2.0 cubic feet tuned to 30 Hz reaches F3 at 26 Hz. That is the number that wins sound quality competitions where low bass scoring matters.

Field-Replaceable Cone Assembly

The IDMAX10 uses the same 16-screw field-replaceable cone assembly as the IDQ Series. Remove the screws, position the replacement assembly with alignment shims, reinstall the screws, remove the shims. No adhesive, no curing time, no professional service required. The 400 ounce motor structure, which is the most resource-intensive component, stays in service.

Fitment at a glance: mounting depth 7.68 inches, cutout 9.625 inches, outside diameter 11.06 inches, driver displacement 0.11 cubic feet, net weight 27.8 lbs. The 7.68 inch mounting depth requires careful installation planning. Confirm rear clearance behind the baffle before building the enclosure.

Sealed Enclosure Performance: Pre-Calculated Results

Using Image Dynamics' published Thiele-Small parameters and their recommended sealed volumes, here are the predicted Qtc, system resonance (Fc), and F3 rolloff. Volumes are net internal per the IDMAX Series manual. Calculated using the same formulas as the Audio Intensity Sealed Box Calculator.

The IDMAX10 has Fs at 27 Hz with 19mm Xmax, producing F3 values from the low 30s to low 40s in sealed enclosures. These numbers are exceptional for a 10 inch driver. The D4 at the Audiophile 1.25 cu ft alignment extends to F3 below 31 Hz sealed. The ported Audiophile alignment at 2.0 cu ft reaches F3 at 26 Hz.

D2 parallel impedance note: The IDMAX10 D2 has Re of 1.80 ohms per coil. Wired in parallel the combined load is approximately 0.9 ohms. Most amplifiers rated 1-ohm stable will handle this, but verify your amplifier's minimum rated impedance before wiring parallel. Wire the D2 in series for a 4-ohm load if your amplifier requires it. The D4 wired in parallel presents 2 ohms, compatible with all 1-ohm stable Class D monoblocks.

Port dimensions for each ported alignment are in the IDMAX Series V.4 manual. Run your own numbers in the Sealed Box Calculator.
