Both share the same front-mounted N42UH neodymium motor architecture, CNC-machined vented iron motor cap, stage-baked tempered aluminum voice coil, raised-cup cellulose fiber cone, butyl surround, Nomex/cotton spider, and spring-loaded terminals. The Arc Audio SW12 uses a 12 inch cone with more piston area, a 3 inch voice coil versus 2.5 inch on the Arc Audio SW10, 15.5mm of one-way Xmax versus 14.7mm, an optimum sealed volume of 0.8 cubic feet versus 0.6 cubic feet, and 2.625 inches of mounting depth versus 2.4 inches. The SW12 costs $629 versus $589 for the SW10. Choose the SW10 when depth or footprint is the tighter constraint; choose the SW12 for more output and excursion when the installation allows

The JL Audio 12TW3-D4 has 3.5 inches of mounting depth and 15.2mm of one-way Xmax. The Arc Audio SW12 has 2.625 inches of mounting depth and 15.5mm of Xmax. The SW12 delivers slightly more excursion from 0.875 inches less depth. The JL Audio 12TW3-D4 optimum sealed volume is 0.80 cubic feet; the SW12 also recommends 0.8 cubic feet. The SW12 uses a front-mounted external motor architecture; the JL 12TW3-D4 uses a concentric tube internal motor design. Both are sound quality oriented. The SW12 positions the N42UH neodymium motor at the front of the driver, outside the enclosure cavity once installed. In a sealed enclosure, the motor sits in open air rather than inside the sealed volume. The CNC-machined vented iron motor cap was developed specifically to manage the acoustic relationship between the motor structure and the loading surface directly in front of the driver in under-seat, down-fire, and front-loaded enclosure configurations. This external motor position also benefits thermal management by exposing the motor to free air rather than trapping heat inside a sealed cavity.

Arc Audio engineered the SW12 specifically for front-loaded enclosure applications: under-seat truck systems, down-fire enclosures, seat-back loaded designs, and stealth installations where the cone faces the loading surface directly in front of it. The front-mounted motor and vented iron cap were developed for this type of close-coupled front-loaded environment. At 2.625 inches of mounting depth, the SW12 fits installations where conventional 12 inch subwoofers at 5 to 7 inches depth cannot be used.

The SW12 is optimized for front-loaded enclosure applications where the motor faces the baffle surface. In a down-fire or front-fire installation, the motor sits in the cavity between the driver and the loading surface, which is the environment the vented motor cap was designed to work in. The spring-loaded push terminals eliminate the need for tool access from behind the driver, which is practical in enclosures where rear access is restricted by the front-loaded mounting orientation. The SW12 uses a 3 inch aluminum voice coil former with a stage-baked tempered winding. The 3 inch diameter provides more conductor length in the magnetic gap than the 2.5 inch coil on the SW10, increasing motor force and thermal surface area. Stage-baking pre-cures adhesives and drives off moisture before assembly, improving thermal stability and mechanical integrity under sustained high-power operation. The aluminum former conducts heat toward the external vented motor structure more efficiently than Nomex or Kapton formers of equivalent wall thickness.
