this driver is vented at 31.0 Hz

The Sundown Audio X-Series v.3 12 D2 carries a 12.68 inch frame and a 9.67 inch mounting depth, and this cabinet gives it 4.121 cubic feet net, vented at 31.0 Hz through a 72.5 square inch port beside the woofer on the front face. F3 lands at 25.8 Hz with 5.97 dB of passband ripple. The 32.0 by 16.0 by 27.5 inch enclosure carries a single 90 degree bend in the port, and the D1 version of this driver shares the same cabinet.

Threaded insert kit ships with this box. Sundown Audio does not publish the mounting hole locations for the X-Series v.3 12, so we cannot install the threaded inserts before it ships. The threaded insert kit comes in the box instead: inserts sized to the woofer, the correct drill bit, 2.5 inch allen-head screws, an allen key and woofer gasket tape. You set the inserts when you mount the woofer, and this box ships with one kit.

Sundown publishes a Qts of 0.490 for the X-Series v.3 12 D2, and the figure checks out against their own Qes of 0.540 and Qms of 4.820. Sundown does not recommend this driver sealed; their own ported figure is 2.50 cubic feet at 32 Hz through a 40 square inch port, and they say it runs in up to a 50 percent larger box. This cabinet is larger, because the gate here is measured at the coil's rated power, 2500 W, and keeping the slot mouth under 17 metres per second at that power takes 72.5 square inches of port, which is what sets the 27.5 inch depth; in Sundown's 2.50 cubic feet no port that fits can hold that velocity. The port stays clean to 2514 W before mouth velocity becomes the limiting factor, the cone peaks at 16.7 of its 30.0 mm at rated power, and ripple across the passband holds at 5.97 dB.

What makes it Professional

Three-layer baffle, flush mount

Three layers of 3/4 inch Langboard Elite make a 2.25 inch
front. The X-Series v.3 12 did not clear the port gate there. The calmest wedge port that fits that envelope is 19.9 square inches at 23.5 by 12.12 by 17.77 inches, and its mouth runs 34.7 metres per second at 2500 W against the 17 metres per second line where a port starts to chuff. That port would stay clean to about 599 W. The slot on this box reaches 72.5 square inches and holds the mouth at 17.0 metres per second at 2500 W.

What the price covers

This cabinet is 8.15 cubic feet outside. This cabinet holds 4.12 cubic feet net and tunes to 31.0 Hz. They call for a port area of 40 sq in. The extra air lowers the low corner rather than raising output at tuning.

The cabinet

32.00" W x 16.00" H x 27.50" D external. Two windowed braces run front to back either side of the woofer, clearing the cutout by two and a half inches. The box ships dry: polyfill detunes a ported alignment. This is our single-twelve ported envelope built around the X-Series v.3 12's own frame and motor depth. It ships as a parcel.

Frame, cutout and mounting depth are Sundown's own published dimensions, and the Qts figure agrees with what its own Qes and Qms predict. Sundown prints the cone area as the nominal disc, so the 462 square centimetre figure behind this alignment is derived from their Vas and Cms instead. They list 30 mm of Xmax without stating how it was measured; their copy quotes four inches of peak to peak travel, so the figure reads as one-way linear, and at rated power the cone uses 16.7 mm of it. The slot mouth runs 17.0 metres per second at 2500 W against the 17 metre per second point where a slot starts to chuff. The D1 coil shares the same basket and fits this same cabinet without a dimensional change.
