Skar's 12 inch at 32.1 Hz, a Qts of 0.32, 35.4 litres of Vas and 1500 W RMS. This cabinet gives it 2.49 cubic feet net behind a 2.25 inch three-layer baffle, vented at 34.5 Hz through a 50.8 square inch slot beside the woofer, for an anechoic F3 of 29.7 Hz in a 32 by 16 by 18.5 inch front-firing box.

Threaded insert kit ships with this box. Skar Audio does not publish the mounting hole locations for the VXF-12, so we cannot install the threaded inserts before it ships. You set the inserts when you mount the woofer, and this box ships with one kit.

Sealed, the VXF-12 needs 0.32 cubic feet net to reach a Qtc of 0.707. Vented, it trades that for deeper extension. The slot is gated at 1800 W, 1.2 times Skar's rating: the channel runs 22.7 m/s and the mouth 16.5, and the cone peaks at 13.3 of its 25 mm with the subsonic filter in place. Skar's own ported recommendation is 1.80 to 2.00 cubic feet at 33 Hz, before driver and port displacement.

What makes it Professional

Three-layer baffle, flush mount

Three layers of 3/4 inch Langboard Elite make a 2.25 inch
front. The VXF-12 did not clear the port gate there. The calmest wedge port that fits that envelope is 24.7 square inches at 28.5 by 11.75 by 17.39 inches, and its mouth runs 23.7 metres per second at 1500 W against the 17 metres per second line where a port starts to chuff. That port would stay clean to about 770 W. It ships as a parcel.

Skar publishes a full Thiele-Small table for the VXF-12 on its product page, including a one-way Xmax of 25 mm. Some of it is softer than it looks. Skar gives no driver displacement anywhere, so 0.139 cubic feet is our estimate from comparable 12 inch woofers; it moves the tuning by a fraction of a hertz. Skar does not say how the Xmax was measured, so we size port and power against it rather than past it. Tuning includes a 1.5 Hz fold loss that is an estimate, not a bench measurement. The slot mouth runs 16.5 m/s at the gate power against a 17 m/s limit, so this is a box to run at its rating, not past it. Skar Audio does not publish the mounting hole locations for the VXF-12, so we cannot install the threaded inserts before it ships. Skar does not say how the Xmax was measured, so we size port and power against it rather than past it. Every figure comes from the Thiele-Small table Skar prints on its VXF-15 product page. Skar publishes no outside frame diameter for its 15s, so the flush recess is sized to 15.36 in with margin. The rear panel rakes 20 degrees, so the cavity deepens from 10.64 in at the top to 17.19 in at the base, and the 9.78 in motor clears it with 0.75 in to spare. Skar prints no bolt circle for the VXF-15, so the baffle ships undrilled with a threaded insert kit and stainless machine screws: set the driver in the recess, mark its holes, drill, press the inserts and bolt it down.

What the Numbers Rest On

Langboard Elite MDF

Premium 3/4 in MDF throughout.

V-Groove and Dado Joinery

CNC cut V-grooves at every panel intersection, sides and brace seated in dados.

Double-Layer 1.5" Front Baffle

Two bonded 3/4 in MDF sheets at the driver face, the outer layer machined as a flush recess.

Skar's Published Parameters

D2: Fs 31.4 Hz, Qts 0.36, Qes 0.38, Qms 4.74, Vas 76.8 L, Sd 779 cm2, Cms 0.080 mm/N, Bl 24.9 N/A, Mms 303 g.
